Weekend Wrap-Up

You guys. This weekend was seriously AMAZING. My parents came to town to visit (they live in Kentucky!) and we had so much fun! Ben & I took them to some of our favorite “local” spots in our neighborhood, which was so nice because usually they only see the downtown area.

So anyway I wanted to share some of the places we went this weekend! These are seriously some of my favorite places in all of Chicago – if you haven’t tried them, I highly recommend!

FRIDAY

Drinks at Village Tap in Roscoe Village.

Ben & I stumbled upon this little gem on a double date and since then we’ve gone literally three times in three weeks. We’re obsessed! It’s so cute and laid back and the perfect little hole-in-the-wall to grab a casual drink. There were even families around us playing Uno – it’s such a cute neighborhood hangout.

Dinner on the patio at Cuba 312.

OMG. This place is mine & Ben’s FAVE right now. We go every Friday, no joke. It’s BYOB and they have a nice little patio out front. I recommend the pork chop or the steak chimichurri. Both are insanely flavorful.

SATURDAY

Breakfast at The Allis at the Soho House.

This place is seriously just gorgeous. And even better? We went at 10 and didn’t have to even wait for a table. My breakfast of choice was the egg white sandwich with avocado and kale. Oh and an insane amount of coffee, of course.

HOW CUTE ARE THEY!?

Get it? GREEN St? LOL. My hair is bonkers.

Shopping on Michigan Ave.

I mean. C’mon. DUH. I splurged on some new PJ’s from Gap. I had no idea how AMAZING their pajama selection was! I will be sure to share details soon.

Lunch at Pizzeria via Stato.

This little place is tucked away in River North and actually my friend’s mom brought me here for the first time when she was in town on business. Their house salad is my absolute favorite in the city (I know, this is a bold statement, but it’s true!) and their pizzas are so thin and crispy and amazing.

Dinner at Namo Thai.

I don’t think anything else needs to be said here. This is my favorite restaurant in the city, hands down. And I was so happy to FINALLY share it with my family! It’s BYOB. Entrees for under $10. We go every Sunday at minimum. My favorites? Pad Kee Mao & Panang Curry. My mouth is watering just typing this.

Evening walk around Wrigleyville.

It’s crazy how different your own city feels when you see it through someone else’s eyes. My parents were loving the nightly Wrigley concerts (Billy Joel & Luke Bryan this weekend!) so we casually strolled through the neighborhood and listened some amazing music along the way!

SUNDAY

Coffee & donuts at Heritage.

I mean. I HAD to bring them to Heritage. Mostly because Mumsy wanted the t-shirt from my last post! But it’s also such yummy coffee and such a beautiful atmosphere. We chatted about the weekend and flipped through magazines and my pops & I splurged on some donuts. It was seriously heaven.

Wine, candles, & meal prep at home.

I always get a little blue when my parents leave town, so a little Netflix & chill was the perfect end to my night! Ben had his fantasy football draft, so I had some time by myself to just recharge and reflect on what an amazing weekend we had. I worked on my blog, had a million candles going, and finished my meal prep for the week!

So tell me… how was your weekend? Did you do anything fun? Tell me everything! I will be back tomorrow with a fun new BOWL recipe and another lecture on why you should do the Whole 30. LOL! Xo.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Hi sweet friends! How was everyone’s week?! I’m currently fighting against the O’Hare Wifi trying to crank out this post before a board another plane! Procrastination at its finest of course… Hehe. Whoops…

Anyway.

The past few weeks I’ve used Mondays to talk about MOTIVATION and get you excited to start your week! It was a fun run, but to be honest I’m just not feeling it as much anymore. So I’m going to switch it up a little bit. Last week I took a little break from publishing new posts and it felt great to get back on schedule and not feel like I’m always running behind. I took the time to wake up early, schedule posts, and come up with some fun new content for you guys!

Today I’m going to share a quick little wrap-up of my weekend!

This weekend consisted of…

Going back to blonde.

I asked for ashy blonde balayge and my girl Kelly at Milio’s delivered per usual. I know my hair was still technically blonde but I grew out my roots for 3 months (!!!) to get it prepped for the balayage highlights. I’m obsessed. Maybe I will do a post soon on how I got my hair ready for balayage? Hmm…

Having a rainy coffee date.

At Heritage. My favorite. It’s so cozy in there. Plus I finally broke down and bought the Heritage tee that I’ve been lusting over. I will be sharing soon! Along with my brown leather tote in the pic above!

Getting my ear pierced. Again.

Notice it’s just “EAR” lol. I got my third piercing done on my left side this weekend. And I actually love it! A group of us promised our bestie Jordan Shull that if she moved here we would get it done. So this Saturday we went down to Claire’s like 10-year-olds and got them pierced! Only one of us held the bear. I swear it wasn’t me. (Shop my wishbone earrings & cute gold hexagons).

Eating way too much Thai food at a NEW Thai spot.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

My coworker swears by Thai Spice. It’s run by an Austrian man (who is SO nice) and his Thai wife who does ALL of the cooking (pretty impressive, right?!) and it’s honestly amazing. I had the panang noodle, extra crispy, with chicken. It’s a little bit pricier than my absolute fave, Namo, but the portions make up for it! (And P.S. there are no pics of the food because you know that good panang curry isn’t exactly picturesque lol).

Having a little lakefront photoshoot.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Y’all. Ben is getting way too good at taking photos. We had an amazing little photoshoot down by the lake front, and I’m sharing the pics this week and I CANNOT WAIT!

Here’s a little sneak peek. See him in there?! (Shop my sunglasses here).

So tell me… how was your weekend?! Was it everything and more? Did you do anything fun, try anything new?! Tell me everything! I will be back tomorrow talking about eating healthy during travel… You won’t want to miss it! Xo.

Left Coast + Four Eyes

Hey guys! Happy Saturday! It’s quite the morning in the Green-Lima household. Blogging on Saturdays is always  a struggle for some reason because we always have somewhere to be (and Ben loves to move up the time we have to be there by like 1-2 hours right after I mention I have to blog). I keep getting distracted and he keeps saying he’s leaving and we’re hollering all over the place at 9 AM and our neighbors probably think we’re nuts.

Anyway…

I have an announcement. I am officially a four eyes.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

But that’s ok because I totally love it. I haven’t been able to see very well recently (over the past couple of months probably) and I had glasses but they gave  me migraines so I never wore them. I really noticed it a couple weeks ago when I was driving home from Kentucky. It was kind of a wakeup call that I needed to go see the eye doctor.

She reassured me that glasses should prevent migraines if anything and my prescription was wrong. So I picked some sweet frames and here I am! (P.S. this is not a plug whatsoever but I went to Pearle Vision and had the best experience and walked out with glasses within 20 mins of picking my frames. They’re awesome.)

ALSO this week, here in Chicago this little food shop called Left Coast opened in my neighborhood and I’m already obsessed.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

It’s this cool, casual, trendy little restaurant in the old Muskie’s Diner in Lakeview. Their menu is full of healthy options – salads, wraps, bowls, smoothies, and they’re adding juice to the menu soon, too. I’m obsessed. It’s an order-at-the-counter-take-a-number kind of place, but there’s surprisingly a lot of seating for such a small spot. Plus, there’s a little patio outside that I’m sure they will open once it warms up (and stays warm).

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

I went with Dorothy Friday morning at 7 AM for coffee & smoothies. My Whole 30 restrictions ruled off a lot of the menu but their breakfast options sounded amazing. I mean they have avocado toast on the menu. That just solidifies their coolness. I ordered a coffee and the Just Beet It smoothie. Dorothy got a coffee also, plus the Kale Mary. Both were soooo delicious. And filling too! It was a nice break from eggs…

Processed with VSCO with a5 preset

Plus their coffee was honestly really good. And I’m kind of a coffee snob.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Overall really fun and amazing and Dorothy & I both agreed it felt like a Saturday which totally killed my focus for the first 2 hours of work. I can definitely see both of us becoming regulars there.

Anyway we’re off to the ‘burbs for a little Mother’s Day action! I hope everyone has an amazing weekend and gets to celebrate their mamas! Shout out to my BFF Mumsy I love ya! 🙂

I’ll see you guys Tuesday with my Whole 30 update! Cliffhanger to leave you with: It’s getting hard. LOL. See you then! Xo.

My Top 5 Favorite Coffee Shops in Chicago

Hey there! Happy Saturday! How amazing is this weather?! I’m currently sitting here with the windows open and PJ’s on and it’s the most perfect Saturday ever. Ben & I just did a quick run to one of my favorite coffee shops and I thought this would be a perfect topic for today! Last week I was talking about the coziest winter dates and one of my favorite things to do is just hang out at one of my favorite coffee shops and sip a cup of coffee.

Through our research, I have decided on some of my favorite spots in the city for grabbing a cup o’ Joe. I know there are a billion coffee spots in the city, and unfortunately I just haven’t had the time to check them all out, but here are some of my favorites!

Let’s count them down…

5)  nitecap, Pilsen

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

This is so hipster it’s like Indie-hipster. Basic hipsters don’t even really know about it yet. Chill in the sunny windows and read a book from the nightstand or come in on Tuesdays for a tarot card reading or Sundays for some live jazz. Beverage offerings include a basil latte, which I haven’t tried, but I’m highly intrigued.

4) Bow Truss, River North

coffee8

Right under the Merchandise Mart L stop is this little gem. There’s not a ton of seating, which is the only drawback, because the coffee is amazing. Don’t come during rush hour – they take their time to make your cup. I recommend the hand-drip for sure. It’s worth the extra $$.

3) Heritage Bicycles, Lakeview

heritage3

Classic coffee shop with a side of bicycles. One of the most picturesque coffee places ever. If you stay, be prepared to get cozy with your neighbors – it’s one of those spots where  you’re probably sitting next to a stranger at your table in a good way. On the go? Grab a donut & a growler of iced coffee on the run.

2) Dark Matter, Lakeview

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

I’m sort of biased because this is steps from my apartment, but they have some pretty darn amazing coffee. I highly recommend the Agave Latte iced – it literally tastes like you’re sipping on the leftover milk from your Cinnamon Toast Crunch. It’s amazing.

1) Floriole, Lincoln Park

floriole

This is my favorite café for multiple reasons – amazing coffee (they serve my fave Intelligentsia), amazing food, and amazing atmosphere. The perfect coffee shop trio. Plus in the summer you can sit on the sidewalk on one of my favorite streets in Chicago. Bonus points: You’re just steps from Sweet Mandy B’s for a sweet treat. (Photo is courtesy of ericajosblog.com)

Honorable mention: Dollop, Lakeview. Strong coffee, no frills, and Hoosier Mama Pie.

What’s your favorite coffee spot in the city? Did I leave off any favorites? Let me know in the comments below!

Brunch at Beatrix

Hey there! How was your weekend? It’s only Monday but it feels like it should be Thursday and I’m already running low on fuel. BUT I had a seriously amazing weekend with my girlfriends celebrating a couple of special birthdays! My friends and I have kind of started a new thing where we go to #birthdaybrunch to celebrate each other’s birthdays and I’m kind of in love with it. I lightly touched on the subject here and I’ve gone into detail on the tradition of the #birthdaydinner here but I thought I would talk about it again because it’s just that great.

Just to re-cap here are my favorite advantages to the #BB:

1) I am a morning person. Brunch just works well with my schedule.

2) Mimosas. Duh.

3) Bloody Mary’s. Double duh.

4) Daytime looks. I love a good floppy hat.  You can’t pull this off at night without looking like the forgotten Olsen triplet. And I don’t even know what this means. It’s just not a good look.

5) The breakfast vs. lunch debate. I never know which way I’m going to go until the very last moment. I feel like this is totally normal.

My girls looking fierce in their daytime looks
My girls looking fierce in their daytime looks. #RAWR

So this weekend the birthday girls picked Beatrix in River North for our brunch celebration and it turned out to be such a perfect spot for this kind of thing. Lots of seating, amazing atmosphere, delicious menu, cocktails (obvi), and really good service where they let you sit and chat as long as you want without making you feel rushed. Which can be kind of hard to come by in a crowded brunch spot.

As soon as I looked through the menu I was immediately intrigued by their fresh squeezed juices. I love a good juice – especially a green one. It just makes me feel better inside. So naturally I ordered the green juice and it was totes bomb.com. Oh and you can also add a shot in your juice if you’re feeling sassy. Nbd.

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

For our main dishes, everything tasted amazingggg. We had quite the little spread going. I ordered the burger (I went with lunch this time) and it was charred on the edges but cooked perfectly inside just how I like it. It was super tasty and filling. The rest of the girls ordered everything from slow-roasted chicken dishes to classic breakfast combos and everyone was super satisfied.

THE SCHPREAD

Andddd then at the very end we got to eat cake for brunch dessert which shall forever now be known as #brussert. When that becomes famous and cool I hope you remember who coined this phrase. Because dessert after every meal is a good idea but especially after brunch.

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

The best part about #birthdaybrunch? We went home, took long naps, and got back together to celebrate again! Because you can never have enough birthday celebrations. And naps are a must on Saturdays.

What are your favorite birthday traditions? Have you ever heard of #brussert? Tell me everything! I’ll be back Thursday with some fun ideas to get you through the winter slump! See you then!
